Submarine Cables

Infinera has successfully completed of a series of submarine field trials over MAREA, a 6,600km submarine cable between Virginia Beach, Virginia and Bilbao, Spain. The trials used the company’s fourth-generation Infinite Capacity Engine (ICE4) advanced coherent technology to help achieve new records for trans-Atlantic real-time spectral efficiency.

Nexans has completed a 6,000km link across the South Atlantic Ocean, to help meet the growing demand for high speed broadband in Africa and South America. The company manufactured and successfully tested the cables for the South Atlantic Inter Link (SAIL) project.

An affiliate of Cerberus Capital Management has entered into an agreement with TE Connectivity which will see Cerberus acquire TE's Subsea Communications business, SubCom.

Global Marine has successfully completed two fibre optic cable installations, bringing high-speed connectivity to four UK North Sea oil and gas platforms. The projects were awarded to the subsea fibre optic cable installation company by operator, Tampnet.

The Building Europe Link to Latin America (BELLA) consortium - which boasts a leading investor in the European Commission - has signed an agreement with another consortium, EllaLink, to deploy an underwater fibre optic cable connecting Europe and Latin America.

Google is building a new submarine cable system to connect the East coast of the United States with Europe. TE SubCom has been selected to build the Dunant four-fibre pair cable system, which will span more than 6,400km.

Vocus Group and Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN) have signed a contract to deploy the Coral Sea Cable System – a new submarine cable designed to boost international connectivity and provide high speed telecommunications capacity to Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands.

The undersea cables used for communications could be used to detect underwater earthquakes according to scientists at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and Istituto Nazionale di Ricerca Metrologica (INRiM, Italy), who have developed a new method of using the cables as ‘acoustic sensors.’

Cabo Verde Telecom and EllaLink have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to deliver subsea fibre connectivity to Cabo Verde.

TE SubCom has won a contract with Vanuatu-based consortium, Interchange to construct the ICN2 submarine cable that will connect Port Vila, Vanuatu and Luganville, Vanuatu to Honiara, Solomon Islands.
