EllaLink subsea cable construction complete, second stage announced

EllaLink has completed the marine installation stage of its trans-Atlantic cable system between Europe and Latin America.

The EllaLink submarine cable system is a four-fibre-pair submarine system designed to satisfy the demand for traffic between Europe and Latin America. Linking data centres in Madrid, Lisbon, Marseille, Fortaleza and São Paulo, it provides express subsea connectivity, and offers what the company claimed to be the first ever direct fibre pair between the two continents. The project was announced in 2018, with work beginning the following year.

Now that the installation work is complete, the next stage of the project is to light the network, for which EllaLink has selected Infinera’s ICE6 technology to provide a direct single hop transmission path between data centres in each continent.

The ICE6 800G coherent technology was chosen to help enable EllaLink to offer advanced customer products and services, supporting over 100 terabits between Portugal and Brazil. Furthermore, the network will support a 30Tb/s link from Portugal to Madeira, with an additional 40Tb/s path between Portugal and Morocco in the future.

Meanwhile, the network solutions provider’s GX Series compact modular platform will help to provide customers with the bandwidth needed to meet growing data demands. The coherent technology will additionally bolster capacity on the long-haul terrestrial network between Sines, Lisbon, Madrid, and Marseille. This makes the submarine network itself future-ready, and EllaLink can expand to French Guiana, Mauritania, the Canary Islands, and Morocco, resulting in an advanced submarine system that connects Africa, Europe, and Latin America.

Diego Matas, chief operations officer at EllaLink said: ‘I am proud to announce that we have successfully completed the 6,000km submarine cable installation, providing EllaLink with the robust system it needs to support the network through its lifetime. Infinera’s ICE6 solution is an ideal fit for us. Coupled with our differentiated fibre routes, Infinera and ICE6 will provide us the means to offer our customers advanced products and services from day one, in May 2021.’

Nick Walden, senior vice president, worldwide sales at Infinera added: ‘Deploying Infinera’s 800G solution on EllaLink’s new network will provide a superior networking experience to their customers when connecting between Europe and Latin America.’
