London ISP Community Fibre has announced the appointment of Lord Barwell to the board as a special advisor.

Lord Barwell brings vast experience from working in the housing sector as a former Minister of State for the Department for Communities and Local Government – in line with Community Fibre’s commitment to provide quality broadband to Londoners. Previously, he was elected twice as MP for Croydon Central and three times as a local councillor in Croydon, demonstrating his knowledge of local government and experience as an advocate for the community.

Lord Barwell will advise the board with his expertise in the housing sector, helping Community Fibre to build strong partnerships with landlords across London, and support more properties with its 100 per cent full-fibre broadband connectivity. Community Fibre is on target to achieve its goal to connect 1 million homes in London by 2023, as the London-based ISP recently announced that its network is available to 200,000 properties in the capital.

Lord Barwell said: ‘It is a great time to be joining Community Fibre as it is well on its way to connect 1 million London homes with its recent announcement of 200,000 homes passed plus 130 per cent customer growth in the last year. I’m thrilled to be working with the leading full-fibre network provider in London at this time when everyone needs quality broadband to get online in order to work, learn and connect with family and friends. Lockdown has proven how vital internet access is for all – I’m looking forward to working with Community Fibre to help close the digital divide in London.’

Olaf Swantee, chairman of the board at Community Fibre said: ‘We are pleased to welcome Lord Barwell as Special Advisor to the board of Community Fibre. His valuable experience and leadership in public services will support Community Fibre in providing better internet to even more places in London.’
