Fibre industry 'needs to do more' – Karin Ahl
Fibre to the home or building (FTTH/B) adoption in Europe is gathering pace, with the total number of subscribers increasing by 29 per cent in 2013 – substantially faster than the year before when growth was around 15 per cent – according to the latest update to the European FTTH market panorama, which was unveiled at the FTTH Conference 2014 at the Stockholmsmässan exhibition centre yesterday.
UTEL calls for more fibre investment
Following the announcement that the European economy is expected to grow by one per cent during 2014, UTEL, a leading independent research and development company for telecommunications systems, is calling on governments to invest in high-speed broadband solutions, such as fibre, to make sure the predicted recovery is realised.
Three-way networks collaboration
NTT has launched a collaborative study with Alcatel-Lucent Japan and Fujitsu to develop server architecture for future networks.
The companies say the project aims to realise a server architecture that maximises the common part of various functionalities of communication networks with reliability, scalability and easy maintenance. They say the architecture will allow service providers to develop their services efficiently by focusing only on their logic.
Adtran director elected as FTTH Council vice chairman
Kevin Morgan, director of marketing communications for networking solutions provider Adtran, has been elected 2014 vice chairman of the Fibre to the Home (FTTH) Council Americas board of directors.
The company says Morgan’s recent appointment reaffirms Adtran's commitment to advancing the fibre technology and standards that enable service providers across America to simplify the delivery of advanced, bandwidth-rich services.
Profiting from FTTX workshop announced
Delegates at the forthcoming FTTH Conference in Stockholm this month are invited to attend a workshop on how to maximise returns from FTTX projects.
The half-day event will be presented by representatives from FiberPlanIT, Alcatel-Lucent, Comptel, GE, iToolsOnline and TE Connectivity, and is aimed at providing an overview of a typical FTTX project with different way to ensure the maximum return on investment.
Alcatel to link two Libyan cities
Alcatel-Lucent has signed a contract with the Libyan International Telecommunication Company to build a 1,000 km undersea cable system linking the country’s capital, Tripoli, to Benghazi, and providing the broadband connectivity needed in support of ongoing efforts to revive the Libyan economy.
FIbre network for Dominican Republic?
The Dominican Republic is gearing up to develop a national fibre optic network, according to the Caribbean country's telecoms regulator Indotel.
The development is aimed at improving internet speeds across the country as well as providing better and faster telephone and cable services – while improving communications with the rest of the world.
A spokesperson for Indotel told Dominican Today: 'This network could be compared with a major highway, where all kinds of cars travel at high speeds.'
BT to invest further £50 million in UK broadband
BT is invest a further £50 million into its commercial fibre broadband programme over the next three years, it has announced. The investment will benefit more than 30 cities, helping to make high speed broadband available to more than 400,000 additional premises.
The telecom operator is spending more than £3 billion on deploying fibre broadband and its open-access fibre network already passes more than 18 million homes and businesses. The footprint is likely to grow rapidly as rural fibre programmes are delivered.
Telent on-track with contract extension
Telent Technology Services has been awarded an extension to its on-rail telecoms support and maintenance contract with Level 3, formally Global Crossing UK. Telent has been supporting Level 3 across the UK since March 2009 and has now been granted a multi-million pound, five-year extension to the original contract, ensuring continuity until March 2019.
Alcatel and SFR extend relationship
Alcatel-Lucent is to enable SFR, one of France’s leading telecommunications providers, to meet increasing demand for ultra-broadband access from both mobile and fixed-line customers by deploying its 1830 Photonic Service Switch as the key element of the operator’s legacy optical network moving to one that is all-IP transport-based.
CityFibre and Peterborough seal partnership on Gigabit city roll-out
CityFibre has announced the signing of a strategic partnership agreement with Peterborough City Council, in the UK, at a ceremony held in the city's Town Hall.
Following the recent announcement of its intention to invest privately in the fast-growing city, CityFibre and the Council aim to ensure an efficient and well-planned network roll-out that will benefit Peterborough and transform it into a ‘Gigabit’ city.
