Coriant and Allied Fiber have completed a one terabit-per-second (Tbps) super-channel transmission trial over a 1,700 km fibre optic ring connecting West Palm Beach to Jacksonville, Florida.

World Cup broadcast 'without error'

The company that provided a fibre system for the World Cup finals in Brazil has claimed that all 64 matches were broadcast 'without error'.

Telebras says 166 terabytes of data were transmitted through a 15,280km optical ring connecting the 12 tournament venues to the International Broadcast Centre in Rio de Janeiro.

In all, there were approximately 520 hours of transmission between the arenas and the IBC, from where the images were distributed to more than 200 TV stations across the world.

Prolabs appoints head of technology

Losio joins ProLabs from Cisco Systems, where he recently held the position of lead optical design engineer for its transceiver module Group.

Business group gives broadband warning

The UK government should adopt much more ambitious targets for rolling out high-speed broadband for firms across the UK, according to a business group.

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) says that, with an estimated 45,000 firms still on dial-up – and many more struggling with speeds lower than two megabits per second (Mbps) – it is clear that while the residential market may be seeing the benefits of high speed broadband, this is often not the case for the business community.

Organisers and delegates at Next Generation Optical Networking 2014 in the French city of Nice have declared the event 'a grand success'.

More than 600 delegates – considerably more than at last year's event – made their way to the Acropolis convention and exhibition centre in the heart of the city. Aside from a packed programme of debates, visitors were able to meet a wide range of service providers in the exhibition hall to discuss the latest products and trends in optical networking.

Fibre technology sets record for gas flow measurements

Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh have created an all-optical high-temperature sensor for gas flow measurements, which can operate at more than 800oC, by fusing together the concepts of active fibre sensors and high-temperature fibre sensors.

The technology is expected to find industrial sensing applications in harsh environments ranging from deep geothermal drill cores and the interiors of nuclear reactors to the cold vacuum of space missions.

Angola Cables hails DE-CIX agreement

Angola Cables has announced a strategic partnership with DE-CIX, the German internet exchange operator headquartered in Frankfurt am Main.

The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that establishes a long-term collaboration and creates the foundations of what the companies call a 'new neutral interconnection environment in the Republic of Angola'.

FTTH Council conference heads to Warsaw

The FTTH Council Europe has confirmed that the 12th edition of the FTTH Conference 2015 will be held in Warsaw’s international exhibition centre, EXPO XXI, from 10 to 12 February 2015. The theme of the 2015 Warsaw event is ‘Creating a Connected Continent’.

'The event timing is perfect for Poland since the country is widely implementing its broadband infrastructure,' said Karin Ahl, president of the FTTH Council Europe.

Transmode provides 100Gbit/s service for Birdie event
