Alcatel-Lucent is to enable SFR, one of France’s leading telecommunications providers, to meet increasing demand for ultra-broadband access from both mobile and fixed-line customers by deploying its 1830 Photonic Service Switch as the key element of the operator’s legacy optical network moving to one that is all-IP transport-based.

CityFibre and Peterborough seal partnership on Gigabit city roll-out
CityFibre has announced the signing of a strategic partnership agreement with Peterborough City Council, in the UK, at a ceremony held in the city's Town Hall.
Following the recent announcement of its intention to invest privately in the fast-growing city, CityFibre and the Council aim to ensure an efficient and well-planned network roll-out that will benefit Peterborough and transform it into a ‘Gigabit’ city.
Carillion telent joint venture supplier for BT Broadband Delivery UK
A Carillion telent (60:40) joint venture has been appointed as a preferred supplier by BT to support the delivery of its Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) programme to 33 local authority regions potentially worth up to £500 million.
Carillion telent will work with BT on the BDUK Programme for the next three and a half years.
The BDUK programme will deliver further improvements to the UK's broadband network, with particular emphasis on making super-fast broadband available to rural communities.
Tektronix has announced the acquisition of Picosecond Pulse Labs
Tektronix, a provider of test, measurement and monitoring instrumentation, has announced the acquisition of Picosecond Pulse Labs.
The move is intended to strengthen the Tektronix portfolio in the growing market for test equipment to support 100G/400G optical data communications research and development.
Picosecond Pulse Labs offers products that include ultra-high-speed pattern generators. The company recently introduced the PatternPro line that includes multi-channel 32 Gbps data generators and analysers for 100G/400G applications.
FBGS announces partnership with 4DSP
FBGS has announced it has entered into a strategic partnership with 4DSP LLC, a manufacturer of fibre optic strain, temperature and 3D shape sensing technology.
More custom for Hawaiki cable
Hawaiki Cable, the New Zealand company planning to build a 14,000km cable system between New Zealand, Australia, Hawaii and the US west coast, has signed up another customer.
Auckland-based trans-Tasman WAN provider Solarix Networks has agreed to buy capacity on the New Zealand, Australia and US segments of Hawaiki’s cable.
Solarix director Flemming H. Rasmussen said the 10-year, multi-million dollar deal with Hawaiki would improve Solarix’s trans-Tasman service resiliency and introduce price competition.
Cable links Azores islands to rest of world
Huawei Marine Networks, a submarine cable networks provider, has partnered with Viatel, a Portuguese telecommunications engineering network supplier, to successfully complete the 685-kilometre cable Flores-Corvo Submarine Cable System.
The submarine cable is designed with a 0.96 Terabit per second capacity to provide speeds of 10 Gigabit per second (Gbps) and has the capacity to be upgraded to 100 Gbps in the future.
IBM to acquire Aspera
IBM has announced a definitive agreement to acquire Aspera.
Licensed to clients and partners either in the Cloud or on premise, Aspera's high-speed transfer technology aims to reduces transmission of large files or data sets. The company says it overcomes inherent bottlenecks in broadband wide area networks that slow the transfer of large files, such as high-definition video or scientific research files, over long distances.
Alcatel-Lucent and BT announce 1.4Tb/s trials
Alcatel-Lucent and BT have announced trial speeds of up to 1.4Tb/s with a record spectral efficiency of 5.7 bits per second per Hertz (b/s/Hz) on an existing core fibre connection. The companies say this is believed to be the fastest speed ever achieved in commercial grade hardware in a real-world environment, and is equivalent to transmitting 44 uncompressed HD films in a single second.
OSA sets up innovation award to honour pioneer
The OSA Foundation has launched a fundraising campaign to establish an award in honour of the late optical communications pioneer Tingye Li. The Tingye Li Innovation Award will recognise top-performing young professionals who have demonstrated innovation in their research presented at the annual OFC Conference and Exposition.
CES award for Zyxel Communications
Zyxel Communications has won an award for its its indoor Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) broadband gateway with voice and wireless IPTV.
The product has been named a CES Innovations 2014 Design and Engineering Honoree in the Home Networking Product category at the prestigious 2014 International CES show in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Time Warner Cable expands network with purchase
Time Warner Cable has completed the purchase of DukeNet Communications for $600 million, acquiring an 8,700-mile fibre optic network in the south-eastern US states of North and South Carolina.
The purchaser wants to use the additional network to connect and serve business customers with services such as voice, high-speed internet and cloud-enabled hosting. It also expects to use the extra capacity to grow its carrier business, which provides network access to wireless providers. Time warner Cable provides services to more than 10,000 cell towers around the USA.
