Ciena to provide upgrade for EIG submarine cable system

Ciena is providing an end-to-end multi-Terabit upgrade that will enable a flexible supply of network capacity for the expansion of the Europe India Gateway's (EIG) international submarine cable system.

John Russell, Management Committee Chairman, Europe India Gateway said: 'This single coherent solution provided by Ciena enables us to meet customer demand for more capacity with scalability, reach and resiliency.'

NTE and Icotera enter partnership to deliver gigabit access by optical fibre

Norwegian-based NTE has chosen Icotera as its supplier of optical fibre CPE gateway products. The initial deployment will be the roll-out of a gigabit fibre network to NTE’s business segment in Norway.

NTE, a major Norwegian utility company, has selected Icotera as its CPE partner for the company’s introduction of a new delivery method for its optical fibre services to the business market. This partnership enables a new and automated value-chain for NTE Market by using the IGW-3000-P2P CPE gateway from Icotera.

Fibre technology sets record for gas flow measurements

Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh have created an all-optical high-temperature sensor for gas flow measurements, which can operate at more than 800oC, by fusing together the concepts of active fibre sensors and high-temperature fibre sensors.

The technology is expected to find industrial sensing applications in harsh environments ranging from deep geothermal drill cores and the interiors of nuclear reactors to the cold vacuum of space missions.

Telecom Austria hails successful field trial

Telekom Austria has successfully tested the 400G high-speed technology between Zagreb in Croatia and Ljubljana in Slovenia. This field trial focused on testing the 400 Gbit/s technology on existing fibre optic cables.

IBM sets data transfer record

Researchers at IBM have set a new record for data transmission over a multimode optical fibre, a type of cable that is typically used to connect nearby computers within a single building or on a campus. The achievement demonstrated that the standard, existing technology for sending data over short distances should be able to meet the growing needs of servers, data centers and supercomputers.

Photonic devices built via standard CMOS process

Engineers have demonstrated that low power photonic devices can be fabricated using standard chip-making processes. The work was part of the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s Photonically Optimised Embedded Microprocessors (POEM) project.

They have achieved what the researchers say is a major milestone in photonic technology. The work will be presented at this year’s Optical Fiber Communication (OFC) Conference and Exposition, being held from 9 to 13 March in San Francisco.

CityFibre and Peterborough seal partnership on Gigabit city roll-out

CityFibre has announced the signing of a strategic partnership agreement with Peterborough City Council, in the UK, at a ceremony held in the city's Town Hall.

Following the recent announcement of its intention to invest privately in the fast-growing city, CityFibre and the Council aim to ensure an efficient and well-planned network roll-out that will benefit Peterborough and transform it into a ‘Gigabit’ city.

Cable links Azores islands to rest of world

Huawei Marine Networks, a submarine cable networks provider, has partnered with Viatel, a Portuguese telecommunications engineering network supplier, to successfully complete the 685-kilometre cable Flores-Corvo Submarine Cable System.

The submarine cable is designed with a 0.96 Terabit per second capacity to provide speeds of 10 Gigabit per second (Gbps) and has the capacity to be upgraded to 100 Gbps in the future.
